The Peno brand traces its origins to 1989, founded by Dr. Shriram Pawar with a vision to revive the fading Gormati embroidery tradition rooted in ancient Indus (Sindhu) culture. Recognizing that this heritage—once passed from mother to daughter—was being lost due to modernization, he dedicated himself to preserving it despite facing numerous challenges and discouragements.
With determination, he not only revived the craft but also ensured its continuity by passing this knowledge to his wife, Vijaya Pawar, who further enriched it with contemporary designs while maintaining traditional authenticity. A National Award-winning artisan, she upholds the craft’s quality, intricate detailing, and cultural essence.
Through a non-profit initiative, thousands of rural women were trained and empowered, creating sustainable livelihoods. Officially registered in 2019, Peno has since gained national and international recognition. Today, it stands as a symbol of cultural preservation, women empowerment, and sustainable craftsmanship—reviving a once-endangered art and bringing it into modern homes.
